Description

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 cups beef broth

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 4 slices French bread, toasted
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Melt butter with olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add onions, sugar, and salt. Cook until caramelized, about 30 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.
  4. Add wine, beef broth, bay leaf, and black pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven broiler.
  6. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls. Top with toasted bread and shredded cheese.
  7. Broil until cheese melts and bubbles, about 3 minutes.
