Shakshuka is a flavorful North African dish of poached eggs in a spicy tomato and pepper sauce. It’s perfect for breakfast or brunch.
Ingredients

- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp chili flakes
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 4 eggs
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley or cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add onion and bell pepper. Cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
- Add garlic and spices. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Pour in crushed tomatoes. Simmer for 10 minutes.
- Make small wells in the sauce and crack eggs into them.
- Cover and cook until egg whites are set, about 5-7 minutes.
- Season with salt and pepper. Garnish with fresh herbs.
Notes
- Adjust chili flakes to control the heat level.
- Serve with crusty bread for dipping.
- You can add feta cheese for extra flavor.
